Theory Test

The theory test is split into two sections (Pass Mark)

- Multiple choice (43 out of 50)

- Hazard perception (44 out of 75)

Multiple Choice

You have 57 minutes to answer 50 questions.

A question and several answers will appear on the screen, you have to select the right answer(s). 5 questions will be answered relating to a case study. The story will be about a real life situation you could come across whilst driving.

Hazard Perception

You'll watch 14 video clips that feature everyday road scenes. Each clip will contain at least 1 developing hazard (one clip will contain at least 2 developing hazards). You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.

Practical Test

​

The test will roughly last 40 minutes.

There are 5 parts of the practical test

- Eyesight test

- Show me, tell me vehicle safety questions

- General driving ability

- Independent driving

- Reversing the vehicle

Eyesight Test

You'll have to read a number plate from distance

(20 metres - new style or 20.5 metres - old style).

Show Me, Tell Me Vehicle Safety Questions

You'll be asked 2 vehicle safety question (tell me question before you start driving and show me question whilst driving). Visit the 'Learners' page for all the possible questions you could be asked on your test.

General Driving Ability

You'll be ask to drive in varies road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. The examiner will ask you to pull over and pull away again a number of times during your test. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.

Independent Driving

You'll drive for around 20 minutes by following either traffic signs or directions from a sat nav. The examiner will not fault you for taking a wrong turning and will then guide you get back on track.

​

Reversing The Vehicle

You'll be asked to perform one reversing manoeuvre

- Parallel park

- Reverse bay park

- Forwards bay park (reverse out)

- Right park, reverse

​

Faults

There are 3 types of faults

- Dangerous (this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property)

- Serious (something potentially dangerous)

- Driving (this isn’t potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault)

Pass Mark

No more than 15 driving faults (minors)

No serious or dangerous faults (majors)
